HOW IT WORKS
Weekly or bi-weekly, members of The Organic Box receive a delivery of seasonal organic fruits and vegetables from local and non-local organic farms and distributors. Members are notified late Friday regarding the contents of the next weekly Box and can use our website to customize their box contents until early Monday morning.
Local versus Non-Local
Whenever possible, The Organic Box provides members with locally-grown organic fruits and vegetables. Given the short Northern Alberta growing season, however, during the colder months we bring in non-local organic produce to provide a consistent level of quality to our members. We also offer items such as bananas throughout the year which cannot be grown locally. In 2005, there were 238 certified organic farms in Alberta (including meat, dairy, grains; with 224 acres devoted to fruits and vegetables) - that is only 0.5% of the total number of farms in the province! In 2008, there were 259 farms, so by supporting organic farmers and those 'transitioning' to organic we let them know that we love local organic! (Statistics from Canadian Organic Growers).
In the Summer and Autumn, the bulk of the Box comes from local organic Alberta farming families. During the Winter and Spring, the majority of the produce is sourced in British Columbia and the Northwest United States. Most organic farms are small, independent, family-owned operations of less than 100 acres. Visit our 'Farms Page' to learn more about our producers, both local and non-local.
